Simple cleaning hacks to keep your home show-ready

When your house is for sale, one of the things you’re going to have to get used to is people stopping by with just a few minutes’ notice. These are not your regular visitors though – these are prospective buyers and your home needs to make a stunning first impression.

How do you do it though? You could hire a live-in housekeeper, but we know that’s not really an option. Rather, you will need to learn some cleaning hacks to get the job done quickly.

1. Minimize, minimize, minimize

While this isn’t necessarily a true cleaning hack, it will certainly make cleaning a lot easier. Pretend that you are heading on a 1 month vacation and go through your belongings. The items you pick are your necessities, everything else should be able to go into storage. Remember, the less you have in your home, the easier it will be to keep everything tidy.

2. Use caddies

This may bring you back to your college dorm days, but using a shower caddy is an effective way to keep your necessities together. Then, once you’re finished using the caddy, simply place it in a cabinet. No need to limit this to the bathroom, buy several caddies and have one for the kitchen, office, kids’ room, etc.

3. Clean as you go

This could be a great time to adopt a new habit of cleaning as you go. Finished with a dish? Make sure it goes directly into the dishwasher and then wipe down the sink and put away sponges or brushes. Done in the bathroom? Straighten towels, wipe down the shower, and clean off the faucet and sink.

4. Prioritize what is most noticeable

Prior to your first open house you should have gone through and done a deep cleaning. So, now when you need to speed clean, focus on what is most noticeable. Wipe down counters, faucets, sinks, refrigerator, oven, and microwave. Mop the kitchen (this will make your house smell clean and the kitchen floor is likely the one that needs the mopping). Straighten pillows and towels.

5. Keep the right supplies on hand

Microfiber towels are great for wiping down the bathroom, kitchen, etc. If you don’t already have several on hand, now is a good time to buy a pack. Make sure to have a glass and surface cleaner, wood cleaner, floor cleaner, and some sort of soft scrub powder.

Being prepared to show your house at a moments’ notice can be stressful. We hope that these cleaning hacks will help you feel more at ease and ready to let your house shine.
